OEM vs. Aftermarket: Morimoto Lights, Mazda 3 Coil, KLX110 Plug, and Lower Control Arm Costs

I'm the office administrator for a 42-person contracting company. I manage all the purchasing for the office and the service fleet—roughly $180,000 a year across 14 vendors. That puts me in the odd position of approving repairs I can't do myself. I report to operations and finance, which is a nice way of saying I have to justify every part order twice.

When a driver drops his keys on my desk and says "the lower control arm is clunking," I Google "how much to replace lower control arm" and brace myself. When a headlight dies, I have to decide if the OEM replacement is worth twice the price. And every time, the same question comes up: OEM or aftermarket?

People assume OEM is always the safe choice and aftermarket is always a gamble. The reality is messier. An "OEM" part is almost never built by the car company. It's made by a supplier like Denso, Bosch, NGK, or Sachs, then put in the automaker's box. Sometimes the aftermarket version comes from the same factory. Sometimes it comes from a completely different one. That's the real comparison: not brand labels, but what's inside the box.

The Four Things I Compare

I'm not a mechanic, so I keep this simple. For any replacement part on our fleet, I look at price, fit and performance, durability, and who actually makes the part. Let me walk through that with the parts that show up in my inbox all the time: Morimoto C6 headlights, Morimoto 4Runner fog lights, a Mazda 3 ignition coil, a KLX110 spark plug, and a lower control arm.

Morimoto C6 Headlights vs. the Factory Units

If you search for "C6 headlights Morimoto," you're probably not looking for a cheap copy. You're looking for a replacement that's better than the stock C6 unit. This is the clearest case of aftermarket beating OEM for a specific reason.

The factory C6 Corvette headlights were acceptable in 2005. They're not acceptable now. The original projectors are dim, the cutoff is soft, and the lens haze after 15 years makes it worse. A GM replacement housing from a dealer was quoted at about $900 per side when I helped a friend price a project car. Morimoto's C6 headlights, complete housings with projectors and LED daytime running lights, came to around $1,150 for the pair from a local distributor. Half the price, better output, and a real warranty.

I never expected the aftermarket housing to outperform the OEM unit that clearly. Turns out Morimoto redesigned the optics instead of cloning the old ones. The catch is that they're not OEM. If you're restoring the car for originality, that matters. If you're driving a 15-year-old car at night, the Morimoto housings are the better buy. I'd say that even though the price still isn't cheap—good aftermarket costs money because engineering costs money.

Morimoto 4Runner Fog Lights vs. Toyota's Kit

The Morimoto 4Runner fog lights are a similar story, but with a twist. Toyota's factory fog lights for the 4Runner are fine. They're just not great. The beam pattern is conservative, the light output is meh, and the bulbs are easy to outgrow.

Morimoto's 4Runner fog lights are a direct swap. You pull the factory fog light out, plug the Morimoto housing in, and the beam gets wider and flatter. Less glare for oncoming traffic, more visible road in front of you. The kit price is around $200–400 depending on generation and whether you buy lamps, LED modules, or a full kit. That's close to what a factory Toyota fog light assembly costs. In this case, aftermarket is the upgrade, not the compromise.

Before you order, though, know this: some aftermarket fog lights look like they belong on a spaceship. The Morimoto ones don't, at least for the 4Runner. They use the stock bumper and factory location. I've seen too many cheap "fog light kits" that are just round LED pods zip-tied to plastic. That's not the same category of product.

Mazda 3 Ignition Coil: Why I Stopped Buying the Cheapest One

The Mazda 3 ignition coil is where my "aftermarket is great" attitude hit a wall. I still kick myself for this one.

We have two Mazda 3s in the fleet. One started misfiring in August 2024. The shop quoted $120 for a genuine Mazda coil and $35 for a generic aftermarket coil. I told them to use the cheap one. The car ran fine for about eleven months. Then the same cylinder misfired again. The coil failed. The second job cost almost the same in labor as the first, which is the part everyone forgets. The $85 savings in parts got eaten by a $130 tow and a lost day of work.

I'm not saying every aftermarket Mazda 3 ignition coil is garbage. The range between a reputable brand like Denso—who likely supplies the actual OEM coil—and a no-brand listing is huge. The problem is the no-brand coils look identical in the photos. When the part is cheap but the labor is expensive, I now buy the OEM or the exact OE supplier part, and I verify the brand before ordering.

This is the dimension where surprises aren't welcome. A spark plug can surprise you. An ignition coil shouldn't.

KLX110 Spark Plug: The Case Where OEM Is Just a Box

Not every OEM part is a different part. The KLX110 spark plug is the perfect example. According to NGK's parts catalog, the KLX110 uses a C7HSA. Kawasaki sells the same plug in a white box with a Kawasaki label on it. The aftermarket NGK version is identical: same plug, same gap, same heat range, and usually half the price.

A KLX110 spark plug replacement costs about $4–6 if you buy NGK, or $8–10 if you buy the Kawasaki-boxed version. The only difference I've found is the packaging. There is no "OEM formula" in a spark plug. The factory didn't build it. They picked a plug manufacturer and put it in their box.

So if you're doing a tune-up on a little bike, buy the aftermarket NGK. That's not a compromise. It's a shortcut that saves money without actually saving you anything else.

How Much to Replace Lower Control Arm? More Than One Answer

Now the question everyone hates: how much to replace lower control arm? I hate it because the answer is "it depends" in the most expensive way.

In late 2024, I got three real quotes for replacing the lower control arm on a 2017 Ford F-150 in our fleet:

  • Dealer: $1,130. OEM arm, 4 hours of labor, alignment included.
  • Independent shop #1: $640. Aftermarket arm from Moog, 3.5 hours of labor, alignment extra.
  • Independent shop #2: $820. Same labor time, but with an OEM arm. The arm itself was $290, vs. $140 for the Moog.

Yes, same type of shop, similar labor time, different part price. RepairPal's national estimate for lower control arm replacement tends to fall in the $400–900 range when I check, but actual quotes vary more. For some trucks, I've seen it push past $1,200.

The control arm comparison is tricky. An OEM arm may last longer, but aftermarket brands like Moog and Mevotech sometimes improve on the original design—heavier ball joints, better bushings. Moog is a real brand, not a random listing. But I also had an aftermarket control arm on one of our Dodges that required grinding the mounting hole to fit. That is not something you want to discover halfway through a repair.

Here's my rule for suspension parts: ask for the brand of the part. If the shop says "Moog" or "Mevotech" or another name you can verify, I'll decide based on price. If they say "aftermarket" without a brand, I say no. That word usually means "we haven't looked it up yet."

So What Should You Buy?

I'm not going to tell you "OEM wins," because it doesn't. I'm also not going to say "aftermarket wins," because that's also not true. Here's my buying logic in plain terms.

Buy aftermarket when:

  • The aftermarket product fixes a known weakness in the original. That's the Morimoto C6 headlights and the Morimoto 4Runner fog lights.
  • You can identify the actual manufacturer, like the NGK KLX110 spark plug.
  • You've checked the warranty and return policy. A good aftermarket part has a clear warranty, not just "we'll take it back if it doesn't fit."

Buy OEM when:

  • You're replacing a part that failed, and you don't know exactly what brand the aftermarket part is.
  • The OEM part has a history of lasting longer—or the aftermarket part has a history of failing. The Mazda 3 ignition coil is my example.
  • It's a safety-critical part, and your shop can't tell you why the aftermarket brand is comparable. I'm not a mechanic, but I've learned to be skeptical of "should be fine."

And if you're staring at a lower control arm quote, get the brand, the labor rate, and the alignment cost in writing. Dealerships are not always worth the premium, and independent shops are not always the bargain. The cheapest quote is not automatically the best one. Trust me on this one—I've paid that difference in both directions.
