The fitment problem starts before you install anything
I've been handling fitment reviews for aftermarket lighting and vehicle accessory orders for eight years, from 2016 to now. In that time I've personally documented 61 significant fitment mistakes, totaling roughly $31,000 in wasted budget, return shipping, and rework. Most of that money did not go into defective parts. It went into my assumption that a part which fits automatically works.
If you searched 10th gen civic morimoto headlights this week, you're probably not looking for a lecture. You want to know whether the lamp will work on your car. The honest answer sits below the install photos: it depends on the trim wiring, brackets, harness adapters, and the body modules around it.
The problem is not the headlight
The conventional wisdom is: buy from a reputable brand and the product will do the rest. Morimoto makes serious, well-engineered lighting. I've seen their XB headlights produce a cleaner cutoff than many factory units. But the part is only one node in a system.
In my first year, 2017, I told a customer that a premium set of LED housings was a straightforward replacement for a 10th gen Civic. Physically, it was. The housings bolted in. The connectors looked identical. Then the daytime running light stayed off, and the left blinker hyperflashed. We spent four hours checking the housings before we realized the car was a base trim with a different pinout for the front bumper harness. If I had checked the wiring diagram before selling the kit, the job would have taken one hour.
That moment changed my mental model. Since then I've seen almost the same story repeated with morimoto headlights wrx orders—maybe 25 or 30 times, I'd have to pull the ticket history to give you a real count. The Subaru headlight is tested, the projectors are solid, and the beam pattern is good. The unknown is the car's electrical history: which connector revision, which DRL module, which generation of body harness. Vendors use these words because buyers want certainty. A category page titled 'compatible with 2016-2021 Civic' captures more searches than one titled 'position A only.' I understand the pressure to do the same, but fitment language has to be precise.
Here is something the industry does not advertise: compatibility claims are often based on mechanical geometry or connector shape alone. They do not include electrical architecture, load-resistor requirements, or trim-level variations. That is not always laziness. In many cases the manufacturer never received the full vehicle harness data to verify every combination.
So 'fits' tells you the bolt holes line up. 'Compatible' suggests the manufacturer tested a representative sample. 'Adapter required' tells you the vendor knows where the system breaks. I'd rather see the third phrase on a spec sheet than discover the gap after installation.
What the Scan Strut and wheel orders taught me
The same problem is not limited to lighting. A customer once ordered what they called a scan strut low-profile mount for a vehicle communication antenna because the bolt spacing matched their roof rack. It fit. For about two days. At highway speed, the extra leverage from the mount arm and the antenna weight excited a resonance that cracked a small bracket weld. The mount was never designed for that load path. Bolt spacing was only the smallest part of the story.
Wheels are an even better example. I've lost count of fitment calls that begin with 'the bolt pattern is right.' A Fuel Wheels Pump D515 wheel can have the correct 5x114.3 bolt pattern and still create problems if the barrel misses the brake caliper by 3mm at room temperature. Add a hard stop and heat soak, and 3mm becomes zero. Hub bore, offset, and caliper clearance are not visible in a product photo.
This is why I now ask for the drawing, not just the fitment chart, before signing off on any part that sits in a load path. If the supplier cannot produce a drawing with the interface dimensions, we talk to a different supplier.
The unexpected lesson from belt drive bikes
And before you think this only applies to vehicles with four wheels, consider bicycles. When someone asks me for the best belt drive bikes, the real question is not which company makes the best belt. It is which frame was actually designed for one.
A chain stays on a conventional bike because the frame has a removable link. A belt drive does not work that way. The frame needs a split in the seat stay, a moving dropout, or some other way to get an endless belt around the frame. Put a belt on a frame designed for a chain and you will not get the best belt drive bike; you'll get an expensive lesson in frame geometry.
What most people don't realize is that the same principle applies to headlights, wheels, and mounts. The product itself is usually fine. The interface is where good products go to die.
The real cost is not the part
Let me put a price on it.
In September 2022, I approved a $1,850 order of replacement housings for a fleet of mixed-trim vehicles. I checked model years. I checked mounting points. I did not check module versions. The order was returned 14 days later because 11 of 16 harnesses did not communicate with the cars' body computers. The supplier charged 20 percent restocking plus freight, so the mistake cost $370 in restocking, $210 in freight, and three weeks of downtime. The replacement order had to be split by trim family and arrived in two separate shipments.
That was one of my milder failures. Bad lighting can also fail FMVSS 108 photometric requirements if the housing sits at the wrong angle or the aim adjuster is not set, and that creates a safety issue, not just an invoice issue. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (FMVSS No. 108; nhtsa.gov), replacement headlamps are required to meet the same photometric performance standards as original equipment. Verify current requirements at nhtsa.gov.
(Should mention: the $1,850 order made me build our pre-purchase checklist. We've caught 47 potential fitment issues in the past 18 months using it. That number feels good, because each one would have become a return conversation.)

This is the point where I started to change how I buy.
I used to see 'we do everything' as a sign of strength. Now I treat it as a warning. If someone tells me their lighting brand can also validate wheels, bike frames, and antenna mounts, I wonder how many of those things they actually validate. Expertise needs a boundary. A vendor who answers with 'this is not our strength, here is the engineering drawing anyway, and here is the person who does it better' earned my trust for the next project too.
When I search for the best belt drive bikes, I want a shop that does not sell me a belt until it confirms the frame has a split. When I search for morimoto headlights wrx parts, I want an advisor who asks for the trim level before recommending a harness. When I consider a Fuel Wheels Pump D515 wheel, I want a supplier who asks about brake calipers, not just bolt pattern.
The solution is not to avoid aftermarket parts. The solution is to treat the interface as part of the spec.
A short way to check before you order
Build a small checklist before you approve any fitment-sensitive order:
- Get the manufacturer drawing, not just the fitment chart.
- Confirm the exact trim, model year, and harness revision.
- Ask which vehicle variants are excluded from the fitment table.
- Identify the load path: brackets, mounts, bolts, and dynamic loads.
- Calculate clearance at operating temperature, not static temperature.
- Ask the supplier what they have not tested.
That last question is the most underrated one. A supplier who can name their limits is a supplier who has thought through the boundaries of the product. A supplier who cannot name limits is reading the same marketing copy as you.
I still make mistakes. The point is not to get to zero. The point is to stop calling a bolt pattern a fitment study and start asking the question that most search results do not want to answer: what is the product connected to, and what has to be true for the whole system to work?
